How to: Transfer a Project From One Computer to Another

Use Case

When an agency receives a new computer, all CaseGuard projects can be easily transferred by moving the local project folder from the old machine to the new one.

In CaseGuard, all project data is stored locally under the CG Videos folder. To migrate your work, you will simply copy this folder from the old computer and move it to the same location on the new computer.

Important: Please ensure CaseGuard is installed on the new computer before transferring any files.

Step 1: Locate the CG Videos Folder (Old Computer)

  • Connect a USB drive or external storage device to the old computer.
  • Open File Explorer.
  • Navigate to your local drive (usually C: or D:).
  • Search for the folder named CG Videos.
  • Right-click the folder and select Copy.

Step 2: Transfer the Folder

  • Open your connected USB drive in File Explorer.
  • Paste the copied CG Videos folder onto the drive.
  • Once the transfer is complete, safely remove the USB drive.

Step 3: Move Files to the New Computer

  • Plug the USB drive into the new computer.
  • Open File Explorer and locate the USB drive.
  • Open the CG Videos folder.
  • Select all folders inside it.
  • Right-click and choose Copy.

Step 4: Place Files in the New CaseGuard Installation

  • Open the local drive on the new computer (C: or D:).
  • Locate the CG Videos folder (created after installing CaseGuard).
  • Open it, then right-click inside and select Paste.

Your projects are now successfully transferred and ready to use.

Recovering or Fixing Incompatible Projects

If a transferred project is not working correctly, follow these steps:

  • Open CaseGuard and create a New Project.
  • Add the media files from the original project into the new project.
  • Open the old project folder in File Explorer.
  • Locate the History folder inside the old project directory.
  • Copy all files inside the History folder.
  • Navigate to the new project folder and open its History folder.
  • Paste the copied files into this folder.

Then, in CaseGuard:

  • Open the new project.
  • Go to File Revisions (top-left menu).

  • Select Edit → Version History.
  • Choose “Go back to this history file” to restore your previous work.

Conclusion

By transferring the CG Videos folder from your old computer to your new one, you can seamlessly migrate all CaseGuard projects without losing any work. Once the folder is placed in the correct location on the new machine, your projects will be fully accessible and ready to continue exactly where you left off.
