In Memory of Sergeant Kuo-sheng “Johnny” Wang

The coronavirus pandemic has genuinely impacted Texas residents. Their state has lost more law enforcement officers during this crisis than any other state. Officials face the difficult task of coming forward to residents to brief them of these losses.

On Thursday, August 19, 2021, Sergeant Kuo-sheng “Johnny” Wang, age 52, died due to complications from contracting COVID19 while on duty. Sgt. Wang was a veteran police officer who had worked in civil service with the South Houston Police Department for more than 20 years. He proudly wore badge number 104 as he worked to serve his community.

South Houston Police Department

Sgt. Wang chose the South Houston Police Department as his way to serve others. SHPD covers the area of South Houston, an original suburb to the city of Houston. It was the one small suburb community that was not incorporated into the Houston city limits in 1913. Today, many residents feel as if it is a part of the city of Houston.

The SHPD has approximately 30 full-time sworn police officers. They cover an area of 3 square miles while providing protective services to residents. Officers not only provide law enforcement in the case of criminal activity, but they are the members of the community who reach out to help those less fortunate. Most departments sponsor annual events to help residents like their Shop-With-a-Cop program.

Sergeant Kuo-sheng “Johnny” Wang leaves behind his wife and three children. The residents of South Houston will pull together to ensure that his family continues to be supported. In addition, officers from all around the area, neighbors, extended family, and friends will share condolences and gratitude for the sacrifice made by Sgt. Wang.

The South Houston Police Department announced the loss of Sgt. Wang on Facebook for residents. “It is with a heavy heart that we have to make this post that this morning our police department lost one our own. Sergeant Kuo-sheng “Johnny” Wang. Johnny, unfortunately, lost his battle with covid early this morning. Sgt. Wang started his career with the South Houston Police Department in 2001 and served our community for 20 years. He was a wonderful husband, a loving father, and a mentor to many at our police department. Please keep his family and his blue family in your thoughts and prayers during this devastating time.”

The International Association of Chiefs of Police or IACP shared condolences with the South Houston Police Department on their Facebook page. “Our thoughts go out to the family, friends, & colleagues of Sergeant Kuo-sheng “Johnny” Wang, South Houston Police Department, Texas.”

The South Houston Police Officers’ Association posted on Facebook their condolences and details about how to help the Wang family. “Many people have asked us how they can help with Sgt. Wang, we are requesting that in lieu of flowers, monetary donations will be accepted at our South Houston Police Department. All money will be given to his wife and his children. We appreciate all of those that have reached out to us and dropped off flowers. We see and appreciate all the love Johnny is receiving from our community and fellow blue family.”
