In Memory of Sergeant Kuo-sheng “Johnny” Wang

The coronavirus pandemic has genuinely impacted Texas residents. Their state has lost more law enforcement officers during this crisis than any other state. Officials face the difficult task of coming forward to residents to brief them of these losses.

On Thursday, August 19, 2021, Sergeant Kuo-sheng “Johnny” Wang, age 52, died due to complications from contracting COVID19 while on duty. Sgt. Wang was a veteran police officer who had worked in civil service with the South Houston Police Department for more than 20 years. He proudly wore badge number 104 as he worked to serve his community.

South Houston Police Department

Sgt. Wang chose the South Houston Police Department as his way to serve others. SHPD covers the area of South Houston, an original suburb to the city of Houston. It was the one small suburb community that was not incorporated into the Houston city limits in 1913. Today, many residents feel as if it is a part of the city of Houston.

The SHPD has approximately 30 full-time sworn police officers. They cover an area of 3 square miles while providing protective services to residents. Officers not only provide law enforcement in the case of criminal activity, but they are the members of the community who reach out to help those less fortunate. Most departments sponsor annual events to help residents like their Shop-With-a-Cop program.
