Texas Announces Death of Officer
Texas authorities are saddened to announce the loss of another officer to COVID19. Coronavirus has hit the state of Texas incredibly hard, and the number of casualties of officers within the state has been significant. On Monday, August 24, 2020, Police Officer Jorge Cabrera, age 42, succumbed to the virus’s complications.
The City of Mission announced on its Twitter feed the following message, which led to the community turning out to pay their respects along the route of the procession for Officer Cabrera. “The Mission Police Department and our entire community is in mourning following the loss of an officer due to complications from COVID-19. A procession was held tonight from Mission Regional to Ric Brown Funeral Home to honor the veteran of the force.”

Cabrera served his community, family, and neighbors by working for the Mission Police Department for the last 12 years. In the end, he gave his own life, protecting his community.
The Mission Police Department has been experiencing growth in comparison with the city. It now has approximately 200 employees and is currently building a second substation on the city’s southside. The department has the city divided into six sectors for easy management. It is a full-service police department that includes an investigation department, K-9 unit, patrols, and a community impact unit. The department is excited about expanding into the new location, which will be located on E. Military Highway. Mission Police are highly respected and work together with their citizens to make a safe and prosperous community in Mission, Texas.
Texas Suffers Under COVID, Family Mourns
The state of Texas has suffered immense loss from the impact of COVID19. As a state, Texas has more correctional facilities. As a result, more officers than any other state in the U.S. As the virus has ravaged these communities; it has hit the law enforcement families incredibly hard. Police Officer Jorge Cabrera leaves behind his wife and three children. He also had friends, neighbors, and coworkers who will share in their immense grief.
The City of Mission, Texas, posted the following tribute and comments regarding the passing of Officer Cabrera, along with a video sharing his memorial service with the city. “On August 24, 2020, coronavirus claimed the life of Mission police officer, Jorge Cabrera. Services for the 42-year-old fallen hero were held at Palm Valley Church, and law enforcement officers from across the Rio Grande Valley came to pay their last respects. Mission Police Chief Robert Dominguez expressed great sorrow over the loss of a fellow officer and friend. “We mourn the loss of a great coworker and friend. There are few words to express the pain of this loss, not only to the Mission Police Department but to our community. We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Officer Cabrera. He will be greatly missed by us all.”
Mission Mayor Armando O’Caña gave a brief statement on the loyalty of Officer Cabrera and his condolences to the family. “His hard work and dedication to serving our community will be missed.”
City Manager Randy Perez expressed sadness over the loss of a local hero and hard-working community leader. “Officer Cabrera committed his life to selfless service, and we are deeply saddened by his passing. We are praying for his family, friends, and law enforcement brothers and sisters during this challenging time as we remember the impact he had on the lives of those around him. We will carry on his legacy in our work and service.”
