In Memory of Police Officer Darrell Adams
Saturday, October 2, 2021, Memphis residents were stunned to hear the news of the tragic accident involving a local police officer. Police Officer Darrell Adams, age 34, died due to being struck by a tractor-trailer while on the job.
The Memphis Police Department was called to a crash scene around 11:00 am Saturday morning. Several officers were on site and investigating the accident. While at the location, Officer Adams was struck on I-40 near North Watkins Street. Adams died at the scene.
Officer Darrell Adams had served the community as a law enforcement officer with the Memphis Police Department for more than five years. Adams was a family man who worked hard to take care of the needs of others. He began working with MPD in 2016.

Officer Adams loved his work serving with the Memphis Police Department. The MPD is an extensive police agency with more than 2,080 officers. In addition, the department has vast jurisdiction. MPD covers 350 square miles and provides various police services to more than 652,000 residents.
The agency is divided into nine separate precincts for easier management. The Mayor of Memphis appoints the department’s Director, but then the city council must ratify the individual.
Officers enjoy their service to the city of Memphis and its residents. Memphis has a rich history in commerce, education, media, art, and entertainment. Officers have ongoing opportunities to help those in need and often volunteer off-time to continue to help others.
Remembrances
Police Officer Darrell Adams leaves behind his wife and family. Many residents and local law enforcement will help support them during their difficult times. Honor guards from the surrounding communities will benefit both the family and residents show their gratitude to Adams with full honors at his service.
Memphis Police Chief Cerelyn Davis was saddened by the loss and shared condolences for the family. “Today, my heart aches again for the loss of another dedicated servant of our city. I am in deep prayer for our officer’s family and the men and women of the Memphis Police Department.”
Memphis Mayor Jim Strickland posted his shared grief with residents. “My thoughts and prayers are with the family of Officer Darrell Adams, his friends, and @Mem_PoliceDept. Today serves as another solemn reminder of the risks our officers take each time they put on the uniform in service to others.”
NYPD Chaplain’s Unit shared the news and their prayers online. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, and colleagues of @MEM_PoliceDept. Police Officer Darrell Adams who was killed in the line of duty. May God grant him eternal rest. #NeverForget.”
The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office was saddened to hear the loss in a neighboring agency. They reached out to the department and family.
